Our founder Andy King was honoured to be presented with the Great Dunmow Town Award 2018 for outstanding contributions to the town. Andy was presented with a certificate by the Town Mayor Barrie Easter at the Civic Service in St Mary's Church, Great Dunmow.
Andy started his musical journey at the age of 7 years old playing cornet in Regent Hall Young Peoples Band of the Salvation Army. He then later progressed to the Regent Hall Senior Band on Tenor Horn playing under the baton of many renowned bandmasters including Eric Rapp, Geoff Nunn and Peter Graham.
In 1992 Andy joined the British Army as a Euphonium player and after completing basic training in Catterick Garrison studied for a year as a music student at The Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall.
After graduating from Kneller Hall Andy took up the Euphonium chair in Her Majesty's Band of The Queens Royal Lancers in Osnabruck, Germany.
Posted back to England in 1995 Andy became a musician in The Band of The Blues and Royals.
On completion of the intense Household Cavalry six months equestrian course Andy joined the band on Euphonium enjoying a great career as a musician in the band playing for the Royal family, performing for many state and ceremonial occasions, touring many countries, playing to tourists including Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and entertaining the troops in England and abroad.
Andy completed his army career in 2013 and moved to Dunmow with his wife Della. He saw the opportunity to use his years of musical experience to form Great Dunmow's first concert band. The band has since gone from strength to strength with many new members and numerous engagements around the area, while raising thousand of pounds for local charities.
Sadly, Andy passed away unexpectedly in June 2022.
We will always be extremely grateful for his enormous contribution to the music of Great Dunmow.
